The diabolus has a radically different niche to the centipedes. Its hellsphere cannon can blow up your killbox, but can be an equally devasting weapon against your enemies. A diabolus is only slightly bulkier than a centipede. Therefore, you should build diaboli if its cannon is desired, or centipedes if the cannon is not desired. More complex mechanoids require more research. Mechanoid research in particular requires killing one of three mechanoid commanders - the diabolus, war queen, and apocriton, in order of progression - and studying their specific item before it is possible. Hostile mechanoids cannot be tamed or converted in any way, even if once part of your colony. If you tame a couple rats you can set their allowed area to the corpse pile. Butcher them, then sell the meat and leather. Watch out if you lack the appropriate traits or ideology.
