Jun 22, 2022 · For a "budget rifle" I'm a huge fan of the Axis II. I have a buddy that has an original Ruger American in .308, trigger was spongy, but I hear they've upgraded. Haven't fired a newer one to compare. Another buddy has a Mossy Patriot in 30-06, he's thinking of selling it. The best it shoots is 2 inch groups at 100 yds. The Accutrigger on the Axis II is easily adjustable, crisp, and mine was about 2 lbs lighter from the factory compared with an Axis I trigger. Of course, you could always perform a trigger job on your Axis I, but that’ll void the warranty. Axis I: 6.6 lbs factory trigger pull. It pains me to say this, because I'm a huge Savage fan, but I'd choose the Ruger American out of those two. The trigger on the Axis is horrible (the Axis II acc-trigger is much better), the bolt handle feels cheap, the stock is extra flimsy and cheap feeling, etc. The rifles shoot, but they are just very cheap feeling overall. My 243 is a sweet shooter, but a real barrel burner due to its big overbore. The '06 and 270 are less than the 243, and 308 is slightly less than '06. The '06 is a big case and eats a lot of powder. Powder costs per load of 168gr range from $0.18 to $0.35 per shot. 223 loads are about half of this.

From my experience, the Savage will have slightly better accuracy, while the Ruger will be a bit more durable. The Savage is likely cheaper, but not by much. So, if accuracy is your goal, get the Savage and use the savings for a better scope.
